Nicaragua has 28 volcanoes and has been ravaged by wars and natural disasters. In 1972, an earthquake took the lives of 6000 people and in 1989, Hurricane Mitch took another 3800. It is a country that has had to depend on the generosity of other countries to help rebuild several times.
Nicaragua is a beautiful country that has a land mass slightly larger than New York State and a population of 6,150,000 people. There is no such thing as welfare or food stamps and the unemployment rate is at 7.5%. There are three classes of people; the wealthy, the poor and the extremely poor. According to reports, 1 in 3 children are undernourished.
